Why You Need a Car in Thessaloniki
Thessaloniki is a brilliant walking city. The waterfront, the White Tower, Aristotelous Square, Modiano Market, the Byzantine walls of Ano Poli — you can do all of it on foot.
But Thessaloniki is also the gateway to the whole of Northern Greece, and that part doesn't come with a bus schedule that suits you.
With a car from otoQ, all of this is a day trip:
- Halkidiki — Kassandra for beach bars and sunsets, Sithonia for the wild, pine-fringed coves (Kavourotrypes, Vourvourou, Karydi), Ouranoupoli for Mount Athos views
- Mount Olympus & Litochoro — the mythical home of the gods, about 1.5 hours down the motorway
- Meteora — the monasteries in the sky, an unforgettable long day out
- Vergina & Pella — the royal tombs of Philip II and the birthplace of Alexander the Great
- Edessa & Loutra Pozar — waterfalls, then thermal springs in the mountains
- Nymfaio & Prespes Lakes — stone villages, bears, and one of Europe's most beautiful border lakes
- Naoussa & Goumenissa wine roads — Xinomavro country, cellar doors and long lunches
- Old Panorama, Chortiatis and Peraia — 20 minutes from the centre, views over the whole Thermaic Gulf
One car. One week. An entire region.
Driving in Thessaloniki — What You Should Know
- Drive on the right, overtake on the left
- The A1 (Athens–Thessaloniki) and A2 Egnatia Odos motorways are excellent and fast — they are tolled, so keep a few euros in cash or use a card lane
- The Periferiakos (ring road) is the quickest way around the city, but avoid 08:00–10:00 and 14:00–16:00
- City-centre traffic is busy; Tsimiski, Egnatia and Nikis are best avoided at rush hour
- Rural and mountain roads are scenic and generally in good shape — take the hairpins slowly and watch for livestock
- Speed limits: roughly 50 km/h in town, 90 km/h on open roads, 130 km/h on motorways
- Fuel is widely available, and most stations are attended — just say "full, please"
Pro tip: download offline maps before heading into the mountains around Pieria, Pella and Prespes — signal disappears fast.
Parking in Thessaloniki
- The city centre uses a controlled parking system — pay at the machine or via app, and check the signs for resident-only bays
- Free street parking is realistic in the outer neighbourhoods and around the ring road, less so downtown
- Paid garages are your best bet near Aristotelous Square, Ladadika, the Port, and the New Waterfront
- Do not park on yellow lines, in bus lanes, at taxi ranks, or on corners — fines are enforced and cars are towed
- Heading to Halkidiki beaches in July and August? Arrive before 11:00 or expect a long walk
