Driving in Thessaloniki — What You Should Know

• Drive on the right, overtake on the left
• The A1 (Athens–Thessaloniki) and A2 Egnatia Odos motorways are excellent and fast — they are tolled, so keep a few euros in cash or use a card lane
• The Periferiakos (ring road) is the quickest way around the city, but avoid 08:00–10:00 and 14:00–16:00
• City-centre traffic is busy; Tsimiski, Egnatia and Nikis are best avoided at rush hour
• Rural and mountain roads are scenic and generally in good shape — take the hairpins slowly and watch for livestock
• Speed limits: roughly 50 km/h in town, 90 km/h on open roads, 130 km/h on motorways
